Before he had the key to her heart, he just had keys.

Or more accurately, he borrowed keys — often ones he didn’t even need. But every excuse for a trip to the front desk where she worked was a chance to get a little closer to what he truly wanted.

Before she knew the true aim of all his visits, she had butterflies. The owner of their building worked out of her office, so it wasn’t unusual for occupants of its various other offices to stop by. But only this one caught her eye.

In the context of a romantic comedy, their early interactions would be called a “meet cute” — an adorable introduction for characters set to become romantically involved. For Emily Martin and Brian Hess, however, these were the real-life start to their love story.
