They were college sophomores living in the same quaint dorm at Kansas State University when their story started. And they were so sure of each other even at the very beginning that they buried a time capsule on their first date — knowing somehow that they were starting something significant enough to save the memories.

As it turned out, they were unable to find the capsule when they came back for it years later. But more importantly, the budding relationship it represented is still going strong and now includes many more memories — including undergraduate and graduate graduations as well as a move to Washington, D.C.

It was there that he created a faux prom, punch and all, in their apartment. He knew she’d always wanted to go to prom but never had — and this prom came with the added perk of a proposal, with him asking her to marry him as they danced to songs on a playlist she’d given him years earlier.

As if all this weren’t enough excitement, they began the fiancé stage of their lives with a move to China, where she serves as a diplomat for the U.S. Department of State. And although planning a wedding from overseas is no easy task, they’re well on their way to having everything in place for their big day next spring — which of course will include a time capsule, although they may leave this one unburied!
