A year is a long time to hold out hope for a first date – but in his mind, she was worth the wait.

It was during a homecoming scavenger hunt at Washburn University that she caught his eye, unaware as she searched the campus for clues that she’d just sent him on a hunt of his own. Of course, he likely never fathomed how long he’d be looking for something seemingly simple: A yes to his request to take her to dinner.

The first time he asked was that fall of 2010, when he made good use of the Facebook friendship they had by virtue of both being involved in student government. However, not really knowing him, she didn’t offer the answer he’d hoped to the message he sent. But he met her reticence toward him with patient persistence, leaving a reminder in her mailbox at a leadership retreat the next spring that he was still waiting on that dinner.

This note and a good word on him from a mutual friend was enough to make her cave – if not to dinner, then at least to texts and online correspondence and his frequent visits to her study spot in the library. By the time a year had gone by since he’d first asked her out, he still hadn’t gotten that dinner but did finally get a first date with her to that fall’s homecoming dance.

If he’d ever wondered whether his patience would be worthwhile, those doubts were silenced that night with their first kiss. And although she’d require still more patience from him in the weeks to come, the fact that Caprice Cortez and Josh Rosebaugh now plan to spend forever together is proof enough that persistence pays off.

They’ll tie the knot next June, and in anticipation of that, we celebrated with this engagement session – where they seemed too in love to even notice the cold.
