Maybe that moment they locked eyes should have been a lesson: Sometimes, you can’t help but fall.

This is what Presley Melvin found, anyway, when she stumbled on the stair stepper that day at the student rec center she and Theo Dean first caught one another’s attention. Looking down from the track on the upper level to where he was below, she gave him a subtle nod of acknowledgement before not-so-subtly losing her balance.

This moment may not have been so mortifying had she known then he hadn’t even noticed – although that’s not to say he hadn’t noticed her. And in the months to follow, thanks to him, Presley would experience much more of what it is to fall without meaning to.

Falling in love, after all, was not in her immediate plans as she looked toward college graduation and life beyond – nor was it something Theo had seen coming in his own life. Nevertheless, that rec center stumble in December 2012 set in motion a wonderful fall for them both.
