the story of
sierra + devon
and wedding photography + videography in Peculiar
~*~
During their first date as college students at Kansas State University, they buried a time capsule – only to find themselves unable to find it later on! But that didn’t keep them from creating another capsule to seal on their wedding day, now with much more history behind them and the whole rest of their lives ahead.
And that unique detail was only one of many they incorporated! About their wedding vision, Sierra shares:
Devon and I love the outdoors. We picked the Barn at Riverbend as our venue because it felt like an escape from everyday life into nature, as well as very intimate and romantic. We really hoped our guests would feel relaxed, peaceful and surrounded by love.
We also love adventure and added elements from our own adventures throughout our reception. Our tables were named for various places we’ve visited or lived, with photos of us in these locations at their respective tables. And our cake design was inspired by our love of the outdoors, hiking and camping.
In addition, we aimed to honor our loved ones through details like memorial bouquets at our ceremony and a memorial table at our reception. I also had ties to family in my “something borrowed” (my great-great-grandma’s rosary, wrapped around my bouquet) and my “something old” (a piece of lace from my mom’s wedding dress sewn into my dress). And even our dessert bar featured some of the signature flavors for which my grandma was well known.
Finally: We incorporated a few more of our own important details. The song for the bridal party’s reception entrance, for example, is the same one that was playing when Devon proposed. And going all the way back to our relationship’s beginning, we have called each other “lovey dovey.” So it was fitting to engrave this phrase in our rings and to paint it on signs that hung on our chairs.
Sierra and Devon: I know that these details just scratch there surface of all the thought and careful planning that went into your day. I also know that the rain that graced us with its presence was not a part of those plans – yet you rolled with the punches like pros, even when that meant switching your ceremony location and having to move your substantial arbor a lengthy distance uphill.
And as I said while we shot your portraits in a downpour: I’m pretty sure this may actually have been the most fitting wedding-day weather for an adventurous pair like you … who had to fly all the way from your current home in China just to arrive at this event! So may you always have fond memories of this day even in spite of its challenges, and may you find your photos and film depict it as every bit as beautiful as it was.
